Registration is now open for the March 27 to April 1, 2023, Small Wind Workshop.
It's been a lonely couple of years around the shop, with our small wind workshop postponed six times! But, we are gearing up to offer it again the last week of March 2023. Won't you join us? Details on the Workshops tab.
Update: Small Wind Turbine Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair NEW DATES March 21, 23, and 25, 2022!
We usually lower one of our towers to inspect the small wind turbine and perform any necessary maintenance and repair during or immediate after our workshops where we make the turbines from scratch. During the 2020-2022 COVID-19 pandemic times, we have postponed our workshop five times along with the service for the local turbines made during past workshops. The Handy Village volunteer team has decided to lower towers and inspect these turbines during the period in which the March 2022 small wind workshop had been planned (now postponed to October 2022, see below). We are currently planning to service these turbines on March 21, 23, and 25, 2022.
If you think that someday you may have your own turbine and tower, or if you are interested to see how lowering and raising towers and inspecting and maintaining our scratch made turbines is done, you may find this opportunity to observe the process to be extremely valuable. For details, please contact us if you would like to participate in one or more of our turbine service days.
Save the Date - Small Wind Workshop Postponed to October 2022
Due to our continuing concern regarding safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Handy Village Institute has postponed the March 2022. We expect to be bringing Guest Instructor Dan Bartmann back for our 5th Wind Turbine Workshop in Saxapahaw, North Carolina, during March 2022, date to be determined.
So, start saving up your vacation time and your funds, and tell your friends and family about this great opportunity to learn and use shop skills, understand the physics of power generation from the wind, and make something that really works to fight climate change with renewable energy. Registration open soon! Early Bird and Local discounts are available. Questions? Use the contact form to ask us about the program and let us know of your potential interest in joining the 2022 workshop. Can't make the workshop this year, have a friend or a family member taking the workshop, want to know what it is all about? Come to our open house planned for Friday evening of the October workshop week, from 5 to 7 pm. Bring kids, musical instruments, something to share. Refreshments will be served. |
Triad Electric Vehicle Association Potluck Picnic 10/5/19
Saturday, October 5, 2019, will bring the return of the Triad Electric Vehicle Association to the Round House in Mebane for their monthly meeting and a potluck picnic. Last year's Fall Shrimp Boil was a such a great success that we decided to meet, eat, sing and play there, again. Expect some tunes and toys, and maybe a Tesla, or two.

REcharge Academy, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA
We joined Michael Arquin of KidWind, and about 40 K-12 and other science resource educators for a week of hands-on experience with tools for teaching about renewable energy. The Handy Village Institute received two scholarships to attend this training, which included bringing back a selection of devices such as really small solar panels and wind turbines, with multimeters, gears, and connectors, to use in demonstrations about how renewable energy works. The best part was joining a growing community of folks dedicated to sharing information and ideas about designing and making working models and simulations for hands-on, experiential learning about power generation, loads, circuits, and measuring electricity.
